    Awesome! Spent a year deciding whether to convert stock turbo to Hybrid, finally came to a decision and I’m glad I came across your channel which led me to purchase the is38-550R about a week ago. Looking forward to getting the best out of this brilliant piece of engineering. Just a question, would the above turbo work fine on a stock map? Obviously considering that I won’t get the full benefit of the turbo until all supporting mods and tuning are done?

      Thank you for the comment, using the stock map will destroy your engine. Do not do it! If you have to drive the car to a tuning shop - make sure you drive OUTSIDE OF BOOST. We recommend using DarkArtz performance for tuning, Yosh and his team know exactly how to tune these turbochargers and have done many of them successfully.

    They say g25 660 but realistically on a Subaru ej25 06 sti it makes 425 wheel torque and about 450-470 wheel hp on e85 ethanol and full spool at 35-3700 rpm depending on load, but this g25660 is a great rally cross turbo for my car.. borg Warner are know for being the toughest turbos. The EFR 7163 will outspool and outperform the gseries garrett By a long shot. We have done side by side comparisons and Garrett lose dismally. The RFR gamma-TI turbine wheels are mixed flow in the 7163 which makes for even better results

    Hello @TurboDirectSA, I've been watching your videos to learn about turbos. I've learned quite s bit however I am still unsure in choosing turbo. I have M54B30 and so far I choose G30-660 with .83A/R. Would that be a wise choice? I will be keeping stock intake manifold with DISA so engine should be quite efficient in low rpm range. I will use it for street driving with around 450HP.

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA 20 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment - to be honest if this was my car, would consider the BorgWarner EFR8370 - this turbo will outspool, and far outperform the G-series Garrett. Over time the G-series has disappointed many tuners, and is overrated. The EFR Gamma-TI turbine wheels are unmatched in spool, linear response and overall performance. The 8370 will produce more power earlier and for longer in the RPM range and make for a very street-able setup, with much better reliability at less cost.

    Hey Chris, love the video. From the information you have given, and from from what I can see. I am thinking it is from the PCV system. The newer low tension compression rings on the piston rings causing lots of blow by. The carbon builds up in the hoses and gets broken off hitting the blade. The only reason I am saying that is I work on Turbine fan blades are not that dirty. However they have erosion.

      Hey - thanks for the comment. The EFR8370 is the turbo of choice for this setup - stay away from the G-series range, it is overrated, and unreliable in power delivery etc. The Gamma-TI turbine on the EFR is unmatched with spool, overall weight, and reliability. I doubt it’s the bearings. Usually it’s the shaft being bent that causes the out of balance.

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA 23 дні тому

      LOL - sorry im laughing, but a bent shaft will not only cause catastrophic damage to a turbocharger, but also it will never last very long at all. imbalance is casued by a poor design bearing, incorrectly balanced rotating assembly, and in the case of a ball bearing cartridge, the quality and accuracy of the ball groove grind and preload WILL cause balance issues. This cheap chinese paperweight we tested is total rubbish - not worth 10USD!

    Boosted Boiz already proved you can make serious power and run a Honda in the 9s with a 100 dollar eBay gt3582. The cheap copy turbos actually are pretty reliable. And after you go through the turbo, rebuild it and pay close attention to details they can be just as good as the real deal. If it’s sized right it’s going to perform. Nitrous will blow an authentic garret appart. And a borg Warner. And even the pulsar turbo. Doesn’t matter the. Brand nitrous can tear stuff up. Since I’m not a payed sponsored racer where every millisecond counts I run the g25-660 pulsar turbo I purchased for 500 bucks. Billet wheel, made 425 ftlbs of torque and 450 hp on ethanol. And 26 psi, on my 06 sti 9:1 compression build. Best bang for the buck turbo IV ever had.

    • @TurboDirectSA

      we have MANY cheap chinese paperweights come through our doors on a weekly basis, some last a week, others dont make a dyno session - NONE of them make good power at all compared to a quality product. Its easy to copy something, and its even easier to copy it incorrectly, which the chinese are fantastic at doing. If you have a shoestring budget - my advise is NOT to get into this hobby - doing something right will cost money - fact.

      @@TurboDirectSA you get three options fast, reliable, and cheap. And you get to pick 2 only. And obviously with the amount of data, research and the quick change of turbo designs completely say from the gen 1 garret gt30r and the gen 3 g- series turbos. Garrett has so many compressor maps and exact sizing, spot on ar. I also understand that by going the Chinese turbo route you get two of the options fast, cheap… how reliable. Well honestly the second you actually balanced that turbo, I noticed a huge difference in just sound alone, spooled way faster, and smoother. As a precision maintenance tech, we spend 85% of our time balancing steam turbines, and any turbo out of balance won’t last at all, even a Garrett that’s been balanced. Then taken apart and re assembled with no balance is at stake of destroying itself. With that said a new Garrett is really well balanced from the factory, you should show the direct comparison to an fresh out of the box Garrett or maybe you have already and I haven’t stumbled accross it yet. And I build full blown Subaru sand cars for a living, not being detoured by money, I’m having fun and IV seen some pretty wild sand cars go for quite awhile on the g25-660 Chinese turbo, on 28 psi

      @@TurboDirectSA I’m not arguing Chinese shit is cheap, and in a blind study if the turbos are in a box you can pick them up and tell the difference between Garrett and China brand whatever they are. Garrett is always heavier due to the housing thickness. which is safer. Plus I can only imagine the balancing machine they are using. It’s probably an old tire machine hob jobbed together and they are trying to balance a turbo on it. Like my dad always said. Buy a China toy it will break on the way home. Buy a China car part. It will leave you and your woman stranded on the side of the road. Lol

    • @TurboDirectSA

      @@user-nf3oq2ge3g Weight has nothing to do with quality at all - that is a very naive thing to say. I can give you a Garrett TR30R turbocharger which weighs 3 kgs lighter than any other turbo on the market, and its not poor quality because it weighs less. Its the actual turbo off the factory Rally team car that Loebe drove in the early 2000's. The chinese product would normally be heavier, due tyo the lack of attention to detail for example - the machining for under head contact on the flange face that mounts to the manifold face - the chinese have always neglected to machine this until recently.

    There is one thing I never hear anyone mention and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because I have it wrong, but a given A/R ratio on a small turbo would flow less air than the same A/R ratio on a larger turbo, correct? For instance, a .92 A/R on a g25-660 would flow much less than a .92 A/R on a G35-1050 ?

    • @TurboDirectSA

They have nothing but raving compliments about thE EFR - the GAMMA-TI turbine is unreal in its response and linearity during Highway use. I understand that you leave the intercooler out of the equation because that is not what should be included for a compressor map. What you did with BSFC which is normally between 0.45 and 0.65 is in my opinion traded with the 2 factor being a 4 stroke engine and that would be 2 * 1728 under the line. So, more or less that works for you but I think if you say 1 LB/MIN gives you 10HP you just should have done LB/MIN = [(CID*VE*RPM/2*1728) / 14.47]. By doing this you CAN SAY an AFR of 12 and a BSFC of 0.5 will give you 10HP for one LB/MIN. [ LB/MIN = HP * AFR * BSFC / 60 ]. So, just one more equation would have simplified the HP estimation with a specific AFR and BSFC and no need to use BSFC in the NA engine equation. [ Extra : If one uses no intercooler and directly wants to see his HP output. Replace PR with DR which is an easy equation. In this example PR of 3 would be equal to a DR of 2 taking an average efficiency of a compressor of 70% would give you 22 LB/MIN (220 HP). ] What is strange about your original equation is the following: If you put in an efficient intercooler of let's say 92% efficiency ( gives manifold temp of 80 °F) you come to a value of 36 LB/MIN which gives you roughly 360 HP. BUT! If you would use NO intercooler with a PR of 3.0 you would get roughly a 312 °F outlet temperature of the compressor (= manifold temperature) which would lead to only 25 LB/MIN which would give you 250 HP. So, by chance your equation has proven to be right for the compressormap but with the note that in the actual setup you would need an intercooler to get the results you predict. All in all I think it is a good setup you made to choose the right compressor because a PR of 3 always needs an intercooler. It got me thinking of the Matchbot setup with all the details and the ones I always use: LB/MIN = CID * VE * RPM * Density manifold / 3456. Density manifold = (Pamb + BP) * 29 / 10.73 * (460 + °F manifold temp). These two you can use in any setup for an accurate power output prediction and not really difficult. To conclude: Using your setup for the compressor map is a good idea but change BSFC with 4 stroke factor of 2 and a DR instead of PR. Using my equations for the actual output no matter what parts are included give the accurate HP outcome. What you can also see is that the intercooler makes 360-220=140 HP extra just doing his thing.

      So it would be a single 2.5 from the header y-pipe about 4' long feeding into another Y, One side going to a 60mm wastegate with a 4or5 psi spring then reduced to 2" then into one side of turbo flange. The other side of the Y would be reduced to 2" then fed straight into the other side of turbo flange . I'm hoping this would make it spool a little quicker.

      This depending on many things surrounding the engine build. To make 1000HP the engine would need to be fully built - which will include CR changes for high boost and exotic fuels etc -

    • @MatthewDelport
      @MatthewDelport Місяць тому

      Yes fully built is understandable, but at what boost will this turbo need to be run at on 2.0 displacement to reach 1000hp ..obviously if all the fueling etc are up to the job

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA Місяць тому

      That’s entirely up to the build of the engine, and supporting hardware. The turbo is along for the ride. Higher CR will spool faster and require less boost - exotic fuels will produce more power for less boost, tuning plays a massive part aswell. That question is not answerable

    I was really looking forward to getting some useful information from this video, but all I learnt was the names of the different parts, which most I already knew😢 I understand the Author doesn't want to give away valuable information to thousands of people, but I am getting into building my own jet engines and am looking for a supplier for compressor wheels, and I would like that supplier to be in my own country of Australia. If I get told the information I want then I will buy off you for the rest of my life, hopefully 30+yrs lol. I actually only have two questions I want answered and then we can talk about size, rpm, boost level and then hopefully price, and then I will be able to start working out the sizes for my designs. To start with I will be using second hand compressor wheels(for testing) out of turbos off cars and larger machinery, which I already, have but if I am going to be buying from you for the rest of my life I want the truth, and I am definitely not going to be telling anyone else about it. I am an engineer as well as sheet metal worker and for the last 25+ yrs I have been doing performance work on bikes, scooters, racecars, road cars(atmo/turbo) trucks and heaps more with my tiny little business GCraig Pe4mance. I would really appreciate it if you would leave me a comment or contact me about the future, thankyou for your time, Craig Landsberg

      Unfortunately noone will share the kind of information that you are looking for. To manufacture a wheel with a specific mass flow rate, surge and choke limit, etc is one thing, teaching you 'how to fish' is unfortunately not an option im afraid. I would contact a company like honeywell - they offer these types of design services.

    Rotation speed is pretty meaningless unless you understand the turbine map and the U/C matching. However the only company that properly map turbines so you can do this is Holset.

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA Місяць тому

      Holset provide absolutely no information on their turbochargers at all. All their products are diesel applications poised in the industrial sector, and you will not find any turbine maps and you will battle for a compressor map aswell - this is unfortunately a fact. BorgWarner are still the best in every aspect of technical information, they even provide flow calibration data on VNT turbochargers for PV and CV markets - not even garrett can hold a candle to them.

    After watching your videos, and looking into the new Garrett compressor maps vs their older tech i have assumptions and questions. The newer Garrett 10 blade compressors move the compressor map to the left, greater mass flow at lower shaft speeds, (better "sealing" for a wrong word idea), better efficiency percentage at high pressure ratios. However, it seems the "leaky" 7+7 wheels catch a bigger "gulp" of air and push the useable map to the right while sacrificing "compressor efficiency percentage"at higher pressure ratios? I'm not a turbo builder, but i am a dyno guy.

      Garrett have gone backwards since they were spat out by Honeywell. Honeywell aero engineers were the secret recipe to the previous successes of Garrett, which are now lost. The G-series is disappointingly poor i have to say when compared to other models that compete head on.

      @@TurboDirectSA Thanks for the reply. I've been studying the new/ old Garrett maps, and it seems the 10blade stuff is good at high pressure ratios, and moves the map to the left, but really doesn't help much off the right side of the map. @@kylemilligan752 Garrett once bankrupt, had to come up with ideas to sell product for max profit, they used ancient journal bearing designs which they had moulds and tooling for in the form of the GTW series, and machined a billet compressor wheel which was nothing innovative, but as long as it was billet and did not outperform the GTX/G-series it would sell, at a massively reduced cost to their manufacturing. All the components that made up the GTW were already old and tooling paid for, and in stock, to assembling something with a new compressor wheel and charging a hefty price for it, was a 'winner' but in fact the product itself is not very good at all, and being journal bearing it didnt last long and was laggy. On the G-series side the design of the compressor is not that great, its literally something that is overrated and by alot. Its not that reliable compared to the GTX Gen2, and the 'clean sheet' claims were simply something to start a new following - they should have been on Gen3 G-series years ago according to ex Garrett employees, yet they are still on Gen1 - pity the dream team is no longer since the management change.

      Its a custom built turbo, which has the facility for H2o cooling, BUT not necessary if you aren't able to use it. Obviously the bearing system will last longer if you did cool it, but this is a very competitive class of racing with short heats and lots of spares. Downtime costs valuable time.
